This statement explains how I manage potential conflicts of interest.
I am a professor paid to teach and write about subjects I choose. No one directs my research or dictates what I must teach or write about. I also write books sold commercially (where possible, under Creative Commons licences); give public lectures, sometimes for an honorarium plus travel expenses; occasionally consult on matters related to my work.
I receive no compensation for non-profit work. Moreover, I serve on no commercial boards and have never held any cryptocurrencies.
I do not promote as policy any position I have been paid to advise on, consult about, or write about. This applies whether payment is direct (to me) or indirect (to an institution in ways that benefit me). If indirect payment occurs, I either remain silent on that topic or disclose the payment. This concerns money only. Other influences—friendship, shared values, intellectual respect—fall outside its scope. Money is different because it creates systematic pressures that disclosure cannot adequately address. What you can trust is that I am not saying what I say because someone paid me to say it.
